NIAGARA AND WOLF.
WHAT TWO PROMINENT NEW ZEA LANDERS ESCAPED. j (SPECIAL. TO "THE TRKSt. ) WELLINGTON, March 11. The Press cables have told us that the raider Wolf twicc very nearly waylaid the Union Steam Ship Company s Pacific mail steamer Niagara. It would be very interesting to us to know exactly the dates on which the Gorman raider got near to the big mail steamer, because about the time that the Wolf was operating in the Pacific, two very prominent New Zeaiaudcrs came across in the Niagara on their way back to this country after their visit to England. The story of the exploits of the raider in the Pacific cannot have come as a complete surprise to the Admiralty. becan.sc for the first time the Niagara came across the Paeiiitr with all lights darkened when the distinguished pair were on board. 'Hie Niagara should be able with reasonable luck to avoid all war dangers. She can fight a little and the can steam fast, but it would be interesting to all of us to know by how narrow a margin they escaped being made prisoners of war.
