EAST COAST WRECKAGE. Several residents of Matata, 11 miles up the coast from Whakatano. about the beginning of December observed on the horizon about 8 p.m .a light in the direction of Cape Runaway, on the East Const. The %ht gradually increased in size for about a quarter of an hour, and then e'addenly developed a- great flare, even though apparently about CO miles distant and 30 miles off Cape Runaway. The opinion held here that a great explosion had takon place aboard some vessel, and it i 3 now believed the occurrence may have had connexion with the burned wreckage found at To Araron. THE GOVERNMENT STEAMERS. It is understood that the Government steamer Tutanekai, which wa3 built by D. J. Dunlop and Co., of Glasgow, in 1896, for lighthouse tendering and cable work in New Zealand, is r.o longer to be used for the latter purpose as she has been found to oe unsuited for the heavier class of cablelaying and repairing work, and arrangement has been made by the Government with tho Pacific Cable Board for the performance of any cablo work that requires tho use of a steamer in 1 these waters. It is intended that the Tutanekai shall before long take up the Hinemoa's lighthouse work, and in visiting the outlying islands to attend to tho depots for shipwrecked crews and passengers.
