THE FALLEN AND WOUNDED. PEKSOXAJ. NOTES. Corporal R. Algoe (severely gassed) is well known in journalistic circles in New Zealand. Ho commenced his career with tho Christcburch Press Company, on the very bottom rung oi {ho ladder, about eighteen years ago, and eventually graduated to the reporting staff of "The Press.'' About IUO3 he left to join tho staff of the Gisbornc "Times," where he remained l'or two or three years, after which he became a member of the reporting s taif of the ''New Zealand Times." Corporal Algoe had always taken a keen interest in all athletic snorts, a fact which stood him in good stead as far as newspaper work was concerned, while his advanced knowledge of shorthand, and other requisites of the successful reporter, made him a valuable man in the journalistic sense. About the beginning of 1914 Corporal Algoc accepted a position on the "Now Zealand Herald,'' and was doing well in that position wh«m ho joined up with the 12th Reinforcements. He saw a considerable amount of service in France, and in addition held various positions at Headquarters and the base, in which his journalistic training made him especially fitted for the work assigned to him. Corporal Algoo is about years of age.
The funeral of Sergeant R. B. Turner, a Main Body man, who died last week, took place on Sunday afternoon, at St. John's cemetery, Woolston the llev. H. N. Roberts, Chaplain to the Forces; who is - home on leave, conducting the service. Military honours were accorded the deceased, and one hundred and ten returned soldiers followed their mate to his last resting place. The C.D.C. were represented by Messrs A. C. Maxwell and "Poulton, it embers of their Hospital Committee, and they also sent a wreath.
Corporal L. I. J. McCarthy (killed) was a brother of Mrs M. Melican, Eden street, Newmarket, Auckland. Ho enlisted and left wjth tho 15th Reinforcements. Bofore joining the Expeditionary Force, he wag despatch clerk in tho Cliristchurch Telegraph Officc, having been transferred from Auckland in 1915, and was considered by the postal officials a most promising officer. The lato Corporal McCarthy, who was very popular among his fellow-officers in the postal service, was 26 years of age at tho time he made the supreme sacrifice.
Mr Feuiz, of Matson's road, Papanui, has been advisod chat his son. Private E. W. Feutz, is returning invalided, fie went with the loth Reinforcements, and was seriously wounded at Messines on May 23th last. Mrs J. A. Caldwell, 504 Barbadoes streotj St. Albans, has been advised that her eldest son, Sapper "Walter J. Caldwell, was severely gassed on February 20th. Sapper Caldwell, who is 25 years of ago, was. born in Christchurch, and educated at tho Richmond School. Prior to enlisting with the 19th Reinforcements lie was employed as a plasterer Ho was a very keen'signaller in the Voluntoejs. Mrs Caldwell has another son serving with the Artillery in France, and a third sen is preparing to enter camp, in April. Mrs . Lugg, of Springston, has received word that her son, Trooper Stanley Lugg, is returning homo. For some time past he has been employed at the base .in Egypt. He left with the J.2th Reinforcements, having enlisted as soon as he reached the age of 20 years. He lias been in several engagements since landing, but escapcd being wounded. Advice has been received by Mrs AY. Kimber, of Springston, that her sen, Trooper Tom Kimber, is returning homo. Trooper Kimber left with the Bth Reinforcements.
