Sir, —When, I ask, is Lyttelton to get a fair deal from the Railway Department with regard to Sunday traffic? Surely with the evidence before them thsy must sec tho necessity of a better service t-o the part. At present the arrangement is that the ferntrain loavefl ChristchureH empty, calls at Woolston for milk for th? port, and comes down without s:nglo passenger. It would not be very difficult for tho Department to allow passengers to travel to Lvtt-elton, leaving ChristcJiure'i about S.SO a.m. by the ferry train, and Lj'ttelton passengers could come up .by. .the train on its return from the eteamcr. A return service could be run, leaving _Chri3teliurch at 3 p.m. and Lyttelton at 5.30. The present method of getting from Christchurch to the port is bv tram to 1 Heatncotc bridge, with a subsequent walk ! of .half an hour to the tunnel at Heathcote and a further half-hour through the tunnel in the dark, unless you arc provided with a light. Anjl ndw the Railway Department have placed notices at both entrances of the tunnel forbidding pedestrians permission to i go through. So the only way left, for those who wish to get to the port is by tram to Sumner, with a further two hours' w u Jk across Evans's Paes to Lyttelton. Whilst the residents of Christchurch have the privilege of travelling by tram to the seneidc, it seems hard that the port residents have no cnance o t visiting their friends, or to see the sick m the. Hospital. litis war muv continue for some time y 6 t, and Ido not think it fair that we should be isolated in the manner wc. are. I sincerely trust that the Lyttelton Borough Council will make an effort to move the powers in authority to get better facilities for the public in Sunday train service.—Yours, etc., SEA-DOG.
