OBITUARY.

MR HARRY MATSON. By the death of Mr Harry Matson, on Saturday last, the province of Canterbury lost one of the best known stock and station agents of the eighties. He received his early education at the Rev. Charles _ Turrell's school, Midmont, Upper Riccarton, and later was one of the first pupils of the Christchurch Boys' High School. At that institution ho won the senior athletic cup. From the High School ho graduatod to the Church of England Grammar School, Gcelong, and at once rose to the forefront in outdoor sport. Ho was an exceptionally fine, track athlete, and was ope of the finest exponents of his day of tho Australian game of football. Whilst at school he played in interstate games. When he returned to Now Zealand he entered the firm of Messrs H. Matson and Co., of this city, and became one of tho best known and respected stock and station agents in Canterbury. Latterly he had not been engaged in activc business owing to ill-health.

MR LTJKE ADAMS. Mr Luke Adams, the well-known pottery manufacturer, who died recontly at his residence, Colombo street, Sydenham, was horn in Hampshire in "May, 1838. He arrived in Canterbury in September, 1873, by the Punjaub, and had remained in the district ever since. Immediately on landing, he was employed at his trado by Mr Wm. and later by Messrs Austin and Kirk. Mr Adams, with the assistance of his two sons, established tho Sydenham Pottery Works in 1881, tmdertaking all classes of pottery work, and supplying; customers all over tho Dominion. Until recent years,«<he was a prominent exhibitor at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Shows, and held many medals and special prizes won iu different exhibitions, including the Christchurch Exhibition, 1882; Wellington Exhibition, 1885: Indian and Colonial Exhibition (London), 1S86; and Melbourne Exhibition. ISBB. But he was, perhaps, better known to the public by his working at tho "potter's wheel" at different Industrial Exhibitions held in Christchurch. The late Mr Adams was a member of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, tho Horticultural Society, and Court Star of Canterbury Lod<re. but took no active Dart in public affairs.
