SUMNER v. KAIAPOI. The members of the Sumner Croquet Clul> vidted Kaiapoi on Saturday and defeated the homo team by ssven games to four. Following wore the results, Sumner players being mentioned first: — Doubles—Mrs J. M. B. Crawford and Mias Bain 26 defeated Mr Butcher and Miss Hiatt 23, liu-s C. H. Hamilton and Mrs Wilson 2S defeated Mrs F.NButcher and Miss Lynskey 11, Mrs F. S. Maddison and Mrs Brown 18 mot Mrs A. Butcher and Miss Hia.t 24 iunfinished). Miss Cooper and Mrs Rimmingion 14 lost to Mrs W. Parnhaxn and Mra I* Oram 26. ' Singles—Mrs Crawford "i lost to Mr A. Butcher 26. Mrs Hamilton 26 defeated Mi?.a Hiatt 14, Mies Bain 26 defeated Mrs V. An advertisement in a newspaper — | only 80 years ago—was evidently "wrote sarcastic." It was to this effect: "Wanted, for a family who havo bad -health, a sober, steady person, in the capacity of doctor, surgeon, apothccai'3', and man-midwife. He must occasionally act as butler, and dress hair and wigs'. He will be required sometimes to read prayers, and to preach a sermon every ; Sunday. A good salary will be given." I
