It was recommended that the old school buildings and siU) at Ashburion be soid by public auction; that L 7 lbs be granted East Christchurch, halfcost of repairs to asphalt at Main and Phillipstown .Schools; that the grant to Elmwood, for clearing up grounds, bo increased to £10 10s; that the. grounds at Harewood be cleared ana fences repaired; that Hanmer Springs !>c placed on the iist of schools to be supplied with dual desks; that tho Board give consideration to tho establishment of an aided school at Kaituna; that a copy of solicitor's letter, stating that it may be necessary to put through an enabling Act to obtain tho freehold of the site at North New Brighton offered by tho Borough Council, be sent to the Minister; that the application to the Department, to make Phillipstown main school, bo renewed; that £7 7s be granted Sehvyn for now boundary fence; that the fixing of the sitq for the new St. Albans school lie left in the hands of the chairman of the Board, the chairman of the Building.? Committee, tho Board's architect, and the St. Albans School Committee: that a copy of- the Department's letter declining the Board's application for additions to Springston South be forwarded to School Committee; that the application of Sumner for increased accommodation l>e reported on by the oenior Inspector: that tho standardised plans for three grades of schools, as submitted by the Board's
architect, after consultation with the ! inspectors, be approved; that, before further additions are made at Linwood, the question of constituting. Phillipstown a main school should be decided. The report was adopted. TECHNICAL AND AGRICULTURE. The Manual arid Technical Comniitteo recommended that the appointment of Mr P. V. iSharpe, commercial master at Hokitika District High School, be approved; that the Minister be requested to arrango for the representation of the committee on the. management of the Christchurch Technical College; that- application bo made at once to the Department for a grant for the ercction of additions to the /present manual training buildings at Grevmouth. The report was adopted. BLIGH'S EOAD SCHOOL. A deputation, consisting of the Rev. F. llulo and Messrs Crosbio and Patrick, waited on the Board, and laid before it the urgent necessity for increased accommodation at the Bligli's road School, a matter which had been dealt with at length at public meetings in the district. Mr W. Brock, Chief Inspector, suggested that tho school should bo made a main school, and the Papanui School rc-built further out. He would not advise asking i'or more than one room to bo added at tho present timd. After tho departure of the deputation, it was decided to refer the matter of making the school a main school to the Appointments Committee, and the other matters referred to to the Buildings Committee.
THE LISMORE SCHOOL. A large deputation, representing the Lismoro School Committee, waited on tho Board to protest against the proposal to shift the Lismore School. 'The members of the deputation stated that they had no objection whatever to Maronan having a school of its own, but they did not want their own school at Lismore shifted, as it would mean that many children would have a long distance to go. On the deputation's withdrawal tho matter was referred to the Buildings Committee. CORRESPONDENCE.
The Department wrote, stating that no further action would bo at present regarding the closing of the Secondary Department of tile Lyttelton D.H.6. The Department also wroto regardthe proposed District High, fccnools at Methv-en and Blackball, that the matters had been deferred pending further information. The Appointments Committee was authorised to deal with the matters of the Methvcn and Blackball schools. It was decided to ofl'er a Gammack Scholarship to Miss -M. S. Johnstone, as Mr E. W. Bennett was unable to take it up. The Defence Department reported that it was prepared to consider on its merits any case in which it was desired that a teacher now engaged on Homo Service should be allowed to resume his occupation as a teacher. The chairman was appointed to represent the Board at the meeting to form an executive council or league for the advancement of Canterbury. All members of the Board were urged to be present if possible. The chairman and chairman of the Standing Committee were appointed to represent the Board on the Arthur's Pass Tunnel League deputation, which will interview the Minister on the subject of the early completion of the , Otira Tunnel.
