Miss Amy Kane (Wellington) is stay ing in Christchurch, on her way iron the South. Mr and Mrs F. Lusty, senr., of Rich mond, -Nelson, attained the fiftietl anniversary of their marriage oil Tucs day. For the first eight years of thei married life Mr and Mrs Lusty residei at Collingwood, and for the past 4: years they have lived at Richmond. Apparently, judging by appearance, every woman present hau decided to don her very prettiest frock for the occasion, and although one noticed that a large number wore the ever-popular and serviceable black gown which nearly every woman includes in her wardrobe in tnese days of war, there were many i'estively-hued gowns seen. Rallenstein, Miss Cowlisliaw, Miss Stella Murray, Miss Linda Booth, and many others. RHODES'S CONVALESCENT HOME FETE. A visit to tho beautiful Cashmere Hills is an outing enjoyed by all. With the added inducement of the lovely surroundings of tho Rhodes Convalescent Home, the garden fete to be held there to-morrow, in aid of the home, should be the afternoon rendezvous of hundreds of Christchurch people, and, granted a fine, afternoon, the affair should be a thoroughly successful one. Not the least of the attractions promised will be a baby show, entries for which are still coming in, and which can fee Tecoived at Box 704, or telephone 261, up to o o'clock to-day. In addition there will he plenty of other entertaining features, including Punch and Judy, a model coach, exhibitions of drill by Bey Scouts, Anzac girls, jiu jitsu, action songs, maypole dances, while in the evening, when the grounds will be lighted by electricity, the AutoPierrots will give one of their concerts. It is expected to bring the evening to a close with a dance. Already large quantities of produce arc being received by the promoters of the fete. There will be plenty of delectable things for sale, including lamb, mutton, goese, fowls, vegetables, pickles, fruit, .jam, sweets, cakcs, icecream, fruit salad, while afternoon tea can be enjoyed beneath the shady trees in the grounds. The Tramway Band will piny during the afternoon and evening. YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION. * The president and Bokrd of Directors of the Young Women's Christian Association gave an "at home" on Wednesday afternoon in the new Rest Rooms, High street, to meet Miss Mary Geddes, National Y.W.C.A. Girls' Secretary for. Australasia, who is visiting New "Zealand Associations in the interests of young girls. About 80 people were present, and were welcomed by Mrs A. ' Kaye, who spoke briefly of the work of the* Y.W.C.A. in Christchurch, and the growth and progress made since its inauguration 16 years ago. She then in- , troduced Miss Geddes, who spoke of the j special work of the girls' department, •
which deals solely with the needs of girls in their teens, either spiritually meni tally, physically, or socially. Miss Nonie Hardie, local secretary for girls' department, then dealt with work being done in the Christchurch Association, where the membership of girls in their teens has now reached %260—nearly onethird of the total membership. Afternoon tea was served. Among thoso present were: Mrs F. Warren, Mrs Lester, Mrs A. Turnbullj Mrs 3>ay. Mrs W. B. 1 Clarkson, Mrs Newell, Mrs Newburgh, Mrs White, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Evans, and others. At a meeting of the Women's Na- > tional Reserve Mrs Wood (president) l presided over a large attendance. Cor--5 respondence was received from Mr Pratt, hon. secretary of the lied Cross . Sales Depot, asking that the various branches of the 'W .N.lt. be asked to ' take a certain number of week-end 1 sales for the Hed Cross at the Catlic- - dral (Square Depot. Alter sonic disi cussion, it was resolved that a reply be sent that the W.N.I?. would undertake to hold four week-end sales during the ensuing nine months. A letter of thanks was received trom the Efficiency Board lor work done in connexion with the militaiy records. A letter was received from Mrs l'ortcr, general secretary, Wellington, congratulating Mrs Wood on the excellent work done by the Ckristchurch W.N.R. during the year. Mrs Wood reported that all arrangements had been made for the presentation of badges to the wives and motheis of soldiers. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool would present the badges. The motion regarding boundaries was referred back until the constitution of the W.N.11. was received from Wellington: On Mrs Lavic's motion a vote of than lis was passed • to the following for the use of their motor-cars in taking the soldiers from the various hospitals:—Mrs McredithJvave, Miss Rose Gerrard, and Mr Wilson. The following Executive Committee was elected:—Mesdames Newell, Lane, Lavic, Berry, Tobin, Raymond, Brittain, and Miss Tabart. TO-DAY'S RECIPE. An Easy Savoury.—lngredients : A pint of boiled rice, two ounccs of gratod cheese, half a dozen mashed potatoes, one hard-boiled egg, brown sauce. Method: Boil the rice carefully in slightly salted water, drain it well. Season aud mash the potatoes, form them into a slab, and put it into a hot dish. Put a layer of cheese over it, and cover with tbo rice. Over this add the slicccl egg, and sift the remaining cheese over it. Put the dish in a quick oven to brown the top, then serve at otico with brown gravy.
