RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (BT "LOOKER-ON.") Trainers aro sending their charges along again in view of the autumn meetings. E. Scoullar won the Gore Cup yesterday with Ascalaphus. The brother to Vagabond appears to like racing in Southland, as at New Year time, he won the Cup at Invercargill. Mr J. E. Henrvs's adjustments for the Great Eafiter and Great Autumn Handicaps are duo to. appear to-mor-row. To-morrow is acceptance day for the principal events at the Auckland Eaater Meeting, and entries for tho minor events closo at the same time. Art looks very well after his spell, and is putting plenty of energy into his work. Tho little Sarto gelding, who appears to have grown, will bo tried over the big fonces again this autumn. F. D. Jones has a big half-brother to Varnish, by Sir Dovo, in his stable that looks as if ho will make a jumper some day. At present ho is very much in the rough. Varnish is being kept to steady pacing. He is ono tho eort that race well on a light preparation, but his front legs do not look good for much. Tho imported Gay Lad, in W. McDonald's stable, looks a greatly improved horse, and he should do his trainer good service before long. C. Emerson and E. C. Porter went North on Tuesday evening to ride at the Napier Park Meeting. On the strength of her two fine showings at Dunedin last month, Rose Pink's victory in tho Nelson Cup yesterday did not cause surprise. Sho was well supported by many people who could not get to tho meeting. At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury liistrict Committee, the programme of tho Ashburton County ltacing Club for May 9th was approved. A jockoy's license was granted to P. E. Smith, and an apprentice jockey's licenso to J. Sunbeam. The transfer from J. B. Reid to G. L. Stead of the two-year-old colt by Kilbr_oney—St. Sophia, was approved. (Bt "Searchlight.") For not driving Harold Child out in tho Waihora Park Handicap Trot, at Motukarara, on Tuesday, J. Payne, owner and driver, was lined £2. The Timaru Trotting Club will hol3 its Annual Meeting to-day, and, judging by the excellent acceptances received a successful day's racing looks assured.
