ELECTRICITY FOR SUMNER.

AN ASSOCIATION FORMED.

On Saturday evening a meeting of Sumner residents was held for the purpose of considering the advisability of oxtending ' the electricity to Sumner. Mr Fitzhenry presided. The chairman etated that the meeting had been called with a view tb thoroughly ventilating the possibilities of electricty in Sumner and assisting the authorities to promote a scheme, if the ratepayers desired it. Several suburbs around Christchurch had recently arranged to be supplied with current from the city, lhe last of these had been New Brighton, lhe rate per unit under the agreement was less than fourpence, and he was definitely assured that the City Council; would reticulate the boi<ougli free of ' cost and supply it for that price, lhe ( borough in tho interests of all could £ not afford to loose this excellent opportunity. The estimated cost was i £200 per mile, and the average house ctould be lit for about £2 5s a year. The saving in the lighting account | ( would foster such an extensive use or j ] gas cooking appliances, that the pre- j _ sent gas plant would bo a better asset j.. than ever. Less coal would bo used, j 1 the borough would be better Jit, the | air would be almost smokeless, and J room \\<ould bo made financially to raise •! loans for other necessary works. He _ moved that an association be estab- . lished, to be known as "The Electricity for Sumner Association." The motion was seconded and earned. 11 'Hie meeting then decided the fol- S lowing points: —(1) That the objects > of the Association should be to obtain t clectric current in Sumner for lighting and other purposes, at lowest possible 1 rates. (2) That this object should be - secured by public meeting, literature, and such other means as the executive - might decide. (3) That the executive * officers should consist of a president, two vice-presidents, secretary, and * treasurer, and a committee of five members. (4) That it be a recommendation to the executive that they meet the committee of the Burgesses' Association in an endeavour to secure their co-operation. The meeting .decided to leave the appointment of the principal officers until a general meeting of members shall be called, the secretarv in the meantime to prepare membership cards and draw up a statement or the society's aims, together with data in j support of the movement. < I , | 1 ; ; ;
