RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Bt ''Looker-On.") The erection of the schooling steeplechase fenccs at Eiccarton has been completed. It is probable that Wellwood and Vascular will be sent over this morning, and the opportunity may also bo taken of giving Bore his first lesson. Art arrived from his owner's station during the week, and he is back in his old quarters in R. Longlej's stable. A little later on he may be tried over the steeplechase fences. : A two-year-old colfc by Martian— Everlasting has joined R. Longley's team. He is a brother to Immer and Immortel, both of whom could gallop A couplo of young ones are being broken in at Mr G. Fulton's station in North Canterbuiy, and in due course will find their way to R. Longle.v's stable. One is a three-year-old filly by JBonny Glen—Boutado, and the other a two-year-old gelding by Martian from the same mare. Tho Canterbury Jockey Club received very satisfactory nominations last evening for the Great Easter aud Great Autumn Handicaps. The Great Kastcr field shows a decrease of three, the number being 43 as against 46 last year, but this is more tnan counterbalanced by tho increase in the Great Autumn Handicap, which has drawn 35 nominations as compared with 24 last year. The class represented is decidedly good, among those engaged bemnr Fiery Cross, Nystad, Margerme, 2s anna, Biplane, Crossus. Sasanof, Sweet Corn, Kocsian, Wisiiful, Meneiaus, Johnny Walker, Parisian Diamond, Adjutant, Wrestler, and Gazique. There are, as usual, in both races, several horses whoso form so far does not cntitlo them to bo regarded as having much chance of success in such important events. Handicaps aro due to app'ear next Friday. The Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will open at Flemington today, the most important event on the card being the iNewmarket Handicap, run over six furlongs. Wedge, who defeated Desert Gold last Saturdav, is top weight with 9st 71b, while Panacre, who finished third behind this pair, has 9st 21b. Poitrina's victory i?i the Oakleigh Plate earned her a penalty of 7lb, making her weight 9st, brought her into favour for tolay s race, but tho course is a trying one, and the last bit may find her out. It is ii strong lield, and tho race should De a very interesting one.

Tho Essendon Stakes, at tho V.R.C. Autumn jMcGtiiior to-day, will linvo special interest for Now Zealanders, as in it Desert Gold will be making her third appearance in Australia. ° Tho race is run at weight-for-ago over a milo and a quarter, a distance over which Mr Lowry's marc lias more than once proved her ability. He is bright and well, and will shortly join the active brigade. The pacers Birdwood and Ben Dillon aro to be sold at Tattersall's to-day. Pearse has nominated his promising three-year-old colt by Lord Agapanthus from Agasenia in the trottins events at the forthcoming Southland Racing Club's meeting. Ho is a nice pacer, and should pav his way in the south. TYhile exercising a horse at Riccarton. tho eight-year-old son of the wellknown trainer, E. McCann, met with a serious accident. Through the horse becoming frightened the boy was dislodged Irom the saddle, draggod some distance, and before assistance arrived he had his arm broken in three places.
