GLADSTONE'S RULES FOR LIFE.
» Nobody seems to have quoted from the recently-published "Some Haw arden Letters" an answer which Gladstone sent to an enquirer for guidance in lite. It is interesting, as will be seen: Rely on it tnat every mind has a work and every life a purpose, which earnest humble pains will not fail to discover; Prefer reality to show; Tho future to the present; _ Manly assiduity and application to supposed, or even real, brilliancy of natural gifts; .. Concentrated to diffused attention • To know, and do, a little well rather than much superficially; To cherish reverence not less than freedom; In doubtful matters to give the doubt against yourself; In all matters, to take for guide such answer as you can best give to the question: "How would Christ have acted?.'* 1
