THE RED CROSS MOTOR CARNIVAL.
If t l le ul W c s onc , thin e above another remarkable from the point of view of an idle spectator at the Motor Carnival on Saturday afternoon, it was the amazing preponderance of male spectators. In view of the fact that most gatherings nowadays contain almost three times as many women as men, Saturday's crowd made one actually begin to doubt that we are in the fourth year of war. On the whole' the scene lacked the kaleidoscopic col- i ouring that is usual at a summer out-1 of-door function, for the sober shades! of the men's clothing did much *o! tono down any gaily coloured frocks' worn by the ladies. Very charming i however, looked the girls who dis- j pensed tea, sold sweets and pro-1 mmmes. and raised, money by tide
issues generally. They were all frocfeed in white with big shady hats, some trimmed Kith scarlet and others with green, and their dainty muslin aprons had ribbons to match. A band or St. John Ambulance nurses, in their trimm uniforms of and grey, made no less an attractive picture. The afternoon was a great one for the kiddies, who for the most part treated the whole affair as a sort of picnic, though small boys approaching the age when the magic of engines comes on them discoursed learnedly to themselves and to occasionally V>wildered mothers upon the merits of this and that rider, and of how such a man took his corners and how onother went ''all out after it." One very small girl kept the bit; grandstand amused for quite a few minutes by dancing a pas seul on the grass beside the stand where the AVoolston Band was playing. Holding out her little blue skirt she pirouetted and bowed and skipped to the music, with the beautiful unconsciousness of childhood to the fact that she was the cynosure of several thousand amused eyes.
