On tho trip up from Lyttelton on Saturday night the main throttle valve becamo disabled about 9 o'clock, and a reduction of speed was necessary. Oa Saturday afternoon the Opawa, which was aground on tho Wairau bar for a period of sis daya, went on the patent slip, at Wellington, for inspection. It trae found that tho vessel had hogged a, little ajnidships, there otherwise being no apparent damage. Mr J. H. C. Bond, of the Union Company, has been appointed a member of the council of the Shipwreck Relief Society in place of Captain C. McDonald, who has tendered' his resignation. N.Z. SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY. In ita annual report tho committee of the New Zealand Shipwrcck Relief Society state that tho most serious disaster during the year waa the sinking of the Poj-t Kembia by an explosion at eea, fortunately without loos of life. Tho society afforded relief to tbe officers and crew to the extent of £280 18s 7d. Belief was a]9o granted in connexion with the following:—Relief crew Welcome, £12; relief crew b.s. , owing to 6re on board, £37 JBe 6d; widow® of two fishermen who lost their lives at Manakan Heads, £20; relief crew Moehau, £12; relief crow schooner Eunice, £23; widow of one of tbe crew of the missing , £10. The society contributed tho sum of £25 to the Otago Patriotic Association, and £5 5s to the British "and Foreign Sailors' Socicty. To the Union Steam Ship Company the committee expressed indebtedness for continued and valuable support, its contributioner amounting to tbe handsome sum of £288 9s 3d: also to the Huddart Parker Proprietary for tho 6um of £37 10s. Tho executivo acknowledged donations received during the year oh follows:—John Ball, legacy, £12 13s 2d; Otago, Wellington, and Bluff Harbour Boards, £10 103 each; Gisborno Harbour Board, £10; Auckland Harbour Board, £5 ss; "Westport Harbour Board, £3; Kelson, New River, Hiverton, and Wangauui Harbour Board, £2 2s each: Wairoa Harbour Board, £1 Is; tho Eight Hon. W. F. ilassev, £1 Is; tlio Hon. W. H. Herriea. £1 Is; E. C. Morris, £1; T. B. Loniftson, 10s, and contributions collected by Captain) Fleming, £33 19a. There is a slight increase in the amount received from annual subscriptions. Tho sum of £415 12s 7d was expended, in affording relief to crews and relatives, but despite the fairly heavy expenditure the position of the society 13 rather better than at the close of last year. WRECKAGE NEAR GISBORNE. DANGEROUS TO NAVIGATION. (press association telegram.) GISBORNE, February 19. The Collector of Customs at Gisborno ad- j vises vessels that the master of the steamar Mako sighted wreckage fivo miles north of Gable End Foreland, two miles and a half off the land, on Sunday.
