Juriss, a New Zealander, who was of the 7th London Recimont, and is a prisoner of war in Germany, lias sent a post card to the Prime Minister, asking to be remembered to all friends. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states, that at the annual ■meeting of tho New Zealand Society ot Civil Engineers, Mr «S. A. R. Mair was elected president, Mr A. J. I'aterson vice-prosidont. Mr F. W. Furkcrt lion, secretary, and Messrs Charles Banks, J. Blair-Mason, and W. J. Roche to vacancies on the council. Advice has beon received that LancoCorporal W. H. Riley, who left with the l'th Reinforcements, has been mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig s despatches for valuable services in France. Prior to his enlistment Lancc-Corporal Riley was a member or tho staff of Messrs ji. Matson and Co., Christchurch. The Rov. Father W. J. Peoples, who for tho past twelve months has been Senior Curate to tho late Vory Bev. Dean Carcw in Greymouth, has received notice of his promotion to Waimato, whero he succeeds the Rov. Father Aubry in charge of the parish. It is understood that Father Peoples n-ill be succeeded at Greymouth by Father Dalton Campbell, of Newtown parish, Wellington. . Mr E. D. Mosloy, of Christchurch, has been appointed, says a Wellington ( telegram, an one of the rc " < lievmg Stipendiary recently authorised by Cabinet. Mr Moslcy, who is a partner in tho firm of Smithson and Moslcy, is woll-known in Christchurch as one of the younger leading members of the legal profession here. He is an enthusiastic bowler, und has been president of tho Christchurch Bowling Club. The Very Rov. Father Paul Aubry, SM. has been appointed the successor of the late Very Rev. Dean Carow in tho pastorate of Greymouth. Although i for the last nine years Father Aubry has had charge of the parish of Wairoato, in South Canterbury, he is ' woll-known on tho West Coast, as ho previously for a number of years was stationed at Hokitika, whero the success of his work was only equalled by his goneral popularity. Ho formorly, was a professor at St. Patrick's Col]ege, Wellington, and laboured also on tho mission at Blenheim, Rangiora, Temuka, and Leeston. Ho is an earnest workor and a very gonial personality, as well as a music lovor. At a band contest held in Greymouth ho was conductor of the Hokitika Volunteer Band, and is himself a firstclass instrumentalist. Miss Ethel Burns, of the Girls' High School staff, received advico yesterday from tho Minister of Defence that her brother, Private Kenneth Burns, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry on tho field. Private Burns is the third son of tho Jato Mr Alexander Burns, of New Brighton, who was for 'many years in i the Christchurch office of tho Lands and Survey Department, and who had seen service in the Maori war. Private Burns left New Zealand with the Bth Reinforcoments, and has beon through all tho heavy fighting in which tho Now Zealandors participated on the Western Front. He was wounded in the head during a night trench raid about fifteen months ago, but the injury was not serious. Otherwise lie has como through his term of active service without mishap. Private Burns was following pastoral pursuits in the Poverty Bay district when ho came to Christchurch and enlisted. A younger brother, Privato _ Leslie Burns, left New Zealnnd with the Main Body, and was killed at tho landing at Gallipoli. Private adviccs havo Been reccivod by Mr T. V- Cheeseman, of Auckland, that his son, Captain G. S. Cheeseman, has beon promoted to the rank of '' major in tho Auckland Mounted Rifles. Major Cheeseman, who is now in his 25th year, is a native of Auckland, and was educated at King's College, Remuera. Ho loft Auckland early in 1916,- With tho rank of lieutenant. After a short stay in Egypt ho was transferred to Gallipoli, and was shot through, the leg during tho sovero fighting of August, 1915. At tho Endsleigh Palaco Hospital, London, he made a quick recovery, and in January, 19J6, was ablo to rejoin his regiment in Egypt. Ho took part in tho advance from tho Suez Canal, and the operations in the Sinai Peninsula, after which ho received his captaincy. Ho was present at the capture of EI Arish, at tho battles of Maghdabad, Rafa, and the first attempt to capture Gaza. He has been through tho wholo of General Allenby's rocont offensive including the fight at Beorsheba, tno advance on Ascalon, tho capturo of Jaffa, and the" fighting in that region.
