David Courtney and Jvanhoc Price pleaded lint guilty to a charge or having, at Christclinrch. oil June Bth. 1917, stolen £34, the property ot Matthew Ryan, and also on the same date of having assaulted Matthew Ryan with inicnt to rob him. Mr Cassidy appeared lor both accused. _ r Raymond, in outlining the case, stated that the accused had met Ryan in a hotel, Ryan having come to town the previous day from Culverden with cheque for Is. and late.r, in the evening, they had followed him down Manchester street and •'•stuck him up" and robbed him. Part of the evidence on behalf of the prosecution was heard and tho further hearing was adjourned till 10 a.m. to-day. MAGISTERIAL. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey. S.M.) drunkenness. "William Howell was fined 10s for a breach of liis prohibition order, and discharged on a chargo of drunkenness. Three first offenders were each lined os for drunkenness. John Burke, a second offender, was lined 10s. THEFT. Frank Rowlington was charged (n two counts with the theft of suit cases and contents. of a total value of £2S 17s. Ho was further charged with obtaining two shirts and a hat, valued at £'o 6s, by false pretcnces. On one of tho charges respecting the suit cases, accused was remanded to appear at Dunediii on Monday, and he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each of tho other charges, ills sentences to be cumulative. REMANDED.,

For cycling on the footpath, Arthur AVr.Uace Robinson, Sani-uol Engdahl. and Arthur llardbattlo were cach fineu 7 S and costs, and Robert Thompson os nnd costs. William Misson was lined 10s and costs for riding a motorcycle on a footpath. For cycling by night withouE lights, Frank Dempsev and Patrick Flannelly wcro each fined 10s and costs. Walter Allen Turner, eharged with driving a motor-cyclo otherwise than on tho seat of" the machine., was convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs. Edward Ernest ITevwood (Mr Ward), for smoking in a- tramcar other than in tho part sot asido for the purpose, was convictcd and ordered to pay costs. William Izard (Mr Fryer), for allowing his fhiamcy to catch fire, was fined os and costs. Alfred J. 7?end (Mr Hunt), having driven a niotor-'hus in a manner dangerous to the public, was fined 03 and costs.

In the Supreme, Court to-day, Mr Justice Hosking heard legal argument in connexion with the ease of Amelia Haywood v. the Union Steam Ship Company, a claim for £2000 damages for tho death of-plaintiff's husband, a waterside worker, while employed oil ono of tho company's boats.
