CITY ELECTRICITY BUILDINGS.
FOUNDATION STONE LAID,
Yesterday afternoon the foundation stone of the building being erected by the City Council for tko housing of the electricity department was laid by the Mayor, Mr H. Holland, in the presence of a fairly large gathering.
The building, wnich is being erected on the corner of Armagh ar.d Manchester streets, will be of two and is being constructed of brick and cement-. It will have a frontage ol 88ft to Armagh street and of 8-'tt- to .Manchester street. On the ground floor will be, on the corner, the large show-room (tiOft by 40lt> which will include, in addition to the snow-room proper, a model kitchen, store-room, an office, and a cashier's room. 1 hese will have large plate windows i" order to display effectively electrical fitting? and appliances. On the sani-. 1 floor will he the office accommodation for the City Electrical Engineer and Ins clerical staff, and there will by also large store-room for the storage ol electrical goods. The allocation of tho space on the first Moor lias not yet been definitely decided upon. I licit will be electrical passenger and goods lifts in the building. '1 he cost ot the building, when completed, it is estimated. will be between .L\OO(J aiul £8000.
Mr Holland congratulated the citizens on po.<s*\-ssin.g sjich a .-pi ;-n----did and up-tn-dat« electricity department. It had been a linaneir.l su(» - ess, and the ratepayers were not likely to Ive called upon to l>car one ;icnn:- of the cost. The gross revenue for the vcar ended March .'slst last was
general and working totalled £1 7.3-V,: interest- and .-inking fund. 1:9-j71: expenditure on new liuiltliim, 13. 'I'llat' was a magnificent record for two years.
After {living a description of the new building the .Mayor stated that the roof would lie a flat one. 'I he walls were huilt thiek. enough to permitof another storey bein<r added if the necessity arose.
Cr. A. H. Taylor, chairman of the Council's Electricity Committee, also spoke. The function then ended.
The members of the City Council and others were afterwards the quests of the Mayor at luncheon at the Clarendon Hot-el.
