TEACHERS AND THE WAR.
4 — PATRIOTIC SERVICE. The Canterbury Education Board has received tho following circular from Dr. W. J. Anderson, Director of Education : — "I have to bring under your notice tho following resolution of tbe Teachers' Superannuation Board at its last meeting, viz.: 'That during the currency of the present war, no application for retirement under the extended provisions of the Superannuation Act bo favourably considered, except in any case where it may be deemed desirable for the efficiency of the service that the retirement should be allowed.' "In bringing this resolution to the notice of your Board, I wish to point out that the Superannuation Board cannot refuse to grant an allowance to any contributor who has a legal right to retire, i.e., in the ca6e of males if the age of sixty-five years, or tho length of scrvice forty years, and in the case of females if the age of fifty-five years or the length of 6ervice thirty years. It is suggested, therefore, that a patriotic service would be rendered if the influence of tho Board" were brought to bear upon teaehers_ entitled to retire under ordinary conditions to induce tliem to continue in the service for a. longer period during the currency of the war. Many teachers have already taken this course, and many more would doubtless follow suit if an appeal were made to their public spirit It is understood that the course of action suggested has Already been adopted by on© or two districts.'
