28th REINFORCEMENTS. CHRISTCHURCH QUOTA LEAVES FOR CAMP.
The men from the Christclmrcli group area for the 28tli Reinforcements paraded at the King Edward Barracks last evening, and went up by the boat to Wellington in charge of Lieut.Colonel Oresswell, Lieutenant Ager, and Sergeant-Major Willcox. The parade at the barracks was in charge of Lieut.-Colonel Oresswell, and there were also present Colonel Chaffey, O.C. tho Canterbury district, Captain Northcote, and other members of the headquarters staff. After a farewell speech by Colonel Chaffey the men marched down to tho railway station accompanied by the C.D.C. Band and the band of the Senior Cadets, as well as by a strong detachment of the C.D.C. and a large number of the public, who saw tho men off and gave them a cheer on their departure. In spite of there having been thirtyone send-offs at the Ashburton'B Defence Office drill-shed, thero was again a very largo gathering yesterday afternoon, when Messrs Nicoll Bros. • hospi l> ably entertained Ashburton's quota, to the 28th Reinforcements. Tho Mayor (Mr R. Galbraitli') again presided, and the Rev. Nelson Wright and Mr H. F. Nicoll briefly addressed the men. The following are tho names of tho men comprising the quota :—■ R. T. EVADING MILITARY SERVICE ACT. THREE MEN IMPRISONED. (PRESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, April 11. At the Polico Court, to-day, Thomas McGhee, a reservist, was sentenced to eleven months' imprisonment for attempting to leave tho Dominion -without a permit, the sentence to be concurrent with that imposed recently by a court martial for deserting from the reserve. William Ennis, boatswain of the oversea steamer on which McGhee was secreted, was convicted of assisting in. the attempt. Ennis has already been in gaol for six weeks, and a further six weeks' imprisonment was imposed. A coloured man, named Lopez, was also convicted of assisting. He has been m gaol for six weeks, and was sentenced to an additional term of fourteen da^s.-
