PERSONAL ITEMS.
Sergeant E. J. Hawthorne, of Canterbury., has received his commission, unci will probably take up duty shortly at Featherston Camp. Mr H. King, formerly of Wanganui, has been appointed organising secretary of the Waikato sub-provincial district of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. There were 54 applications. Mr King is a returned soldier. Dr. Scannel has been appointed to the charge of the Otaki Sanatorium, and suitable rooms arc to bo erected for his residence. Dr. Scannel is a returned soldier, having served for over two vcars at the front. Dr. Huthwaite will still act as medical officer for the hospital. A telegram from Perth to the Sidney papers states that a storekeeper at' the Fremantle Naval Office named A. H. J. Lees has succeeded to a baronetcy. Ho is the second son of Sir Harcourt Lees, Bart., Blackrock, Dublin, who died recently in America. Lees, who is the fifth holder of the title, has followed many occupations, including those of farmer and banker, and has been connected with the Fremantle Naval Office for three years. Mrs Margaret Jackson, of 32 Franklin road, Ponsonby, Auckland, celebrated her 101 st birthday last week, when she was visited by a number of friends. The old lady, who still enjoys comparatively good health, is a native of Ireland, and came to New Zealand in 1872 with her second husband. Corporal John Jackson, a Mutiny veteran, who has been dead some thirty years. Apart from deafness, the old lady showg few signs of her great age.
