CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

■AUTUMN MEETING.

SECOND I>AY.

.Yesterday broke dull and threatening, but the rain held off until late in tho afternoon. The attendance was large. Proceedings commenced with the Peerswick Hurdle Race, and though only three horses faced tho starter, it proved to be a fine struggle, as Master Hamilton only beat Crib by a head, with Cast Iron on their quarters. The public made no mistake when, on the strength of his fine second to Gamecock on tho first day, they made Esfcland a good favourite for the Autumn Xurecry Handicap, for always well up behind Kilrea and Kilflinn in the early part of tho race, when called upon the Finland —War Scaro colt went to tho front for an easy inn. Lovcsick, who was solidly backed, ran very badly, and is evidently not one of the robust sort, and wants to be caught on her day. Of tho rest Kilrea, Kilflinn, and Sisyphus look the most likely to corac on with experience. A useful field of twelve faced the starter for tho Yaldhurst Welter. Samiscn made the most of the running, but was done with two furlongs from home, where Bon, Ogier, and Kilrea took charge, Bon winning very comfortably. Petruchio bolted from tho barrier and took no part in tho race. Sasanof, Marc Anthony, and Miss de Val wero tho la'to scratchings for the Great Autumn Handicap. From a perfect start, Fiery Cross, from No. I berth, was tho first to broaJc tho line. Running past tho milo and a quarter post Fiery Cross had. a, good lead of Adjutant and Be©, with Kilboy bringing up tho field. Up the back of tbo course Fiery Cross was joined by Red Ribbon, ama tho pair tried to make a runaway race of it. Five furlongs from homo Kilboy, accompanied by Varnish, ran from last into tho position behind the leaders. Onco in tho straight Red Ribbon was beaten, and Kilboy went up to Fiery Cross, aid fs. desperate race horn© resulted in tho favourite winning by a head, with Adjutant, who finished well, in third place, close up. Kilboy crowded in on Fiery Cross over 'tho last furlong, or tho result might have been different. It was a very clean race, the only competitor to get into any trouble being Varnish, and he was sent back last on two occasions in 'the early part of the raco. The disappointment of the race was Bee. Always in a good position, the Martian maro" failed -when, tho pinch camo. Th© start for the Addington j Handicap "was not good. Eibble got all tho best of it, -while her most dangerous opponents had tho worst of it, and just failed to catch her. Winter Cherry must be classed as a bad filly at the barrier. Desert) Gold continued on her unbeaten way, •by winning tho Twenty-Fifth Challenge Stakes from Sasanof, all out, by a length and a quarter. This is the nineteenth race sho has won in succession, and she undoubtedly did it on her merits, for tbo going was not quite to her liking, and sho did not gain an inch advantage at the start. Sasanof ran a good raco, biit the Martian gelding .was not xhe equal of Mr T. H. Lowry's undoubted champion. Gamecock ran-a fair race, but, had no chance of beating the pair that finished in front of him. Tete-a-Teto was made favoOrito in the Templeton Handicap, but the rest were all evenly backed. Samisen was the first to break tho line, but she was well beaten two and a half furlongs from home, when Gazique left his opponents and galloped.homo an easv winner. His showing was so good that he must have been ono of. the hardest to beat in xhe [Easter Handicap if he had got a decent I start. Tete-a-Teto ran « good racc under her burden, and it was only in the last piece that Disdainful, who had covered a lot of ground, beat her for second money. Tho meeting was brought to a close with the FinaT Handicap, for which a field of seven went to the post. Beltane was the first out from* the? harrier, and. followed by Good Hope, he mado play for seven furlongs. From thero first ono and then another challenged. He managed to stall them off until close to tho post, when Good Hope came and, heading him off, won decisively. - \ Taken all through, tho Autumn Meeting of 1917 can tako its place in the front rank with tho many fin© Easter meetings that have been held on the Ricearton course. The attendance was quite up to standard, speculation as brisk as ever it was; in fact, but for tho few races that had the minimum number of starters the machine would have put up a record.. As it was, the figures for the meeting were £66,375, as against £63,125 10s last year. The following are tho detailed re-, suits of the racing:— PEERSWIOK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs; second 40 sots, and third 20 sova from stake. One mile and three-quarters. .9.'
