RIFLE SHOOTING.
« FIFTH ANNUAL PRIZE-FIRING MEETING. SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. The fifth annual prize-fixing meeting of tho j Canterbury Military District Rifle Association was continued on tho Redcliffs Riflo Range shortly before 8 o'clock yesterday. Tho light for the opening of the firing was very dull and heavy, while there wa3 practically a calm, with a very occasional pufi of wind from the north, and this proved very tricky to some of the marksmen. The entries for the "B" series, which includes the South Island Championship, to l tailed 160, this number being weil up to the average. The South ' Islajid Championship is arrived at by the forty competitors' aggregate being taken for Matches 1, 2, 3, 4, ana 5. These then fire off 10 shots at 700 yards, and the winner is declared the holder of the South Island Championship Bolt. The present holder is Sergeant Ching, who secured the belt at the Easter Meeting lost year. The final for this year will be fired for this afternoon. Thfe "B" series also include® the Watkinson Challenge Shield, which is held by tho winning team for twelve months. This shield was won outright by the Christchurch Dcfenco Rifle Club in 1914 and presented again by that club for competition. In the Superiority of Fire competition, A series match, fired on Saturday, first prize was awarded to the West Coast team. This team has now been disqualified owing to it 3 composition, and tlu> first prize has been awarded to No. 47 Company, Senior Cadets, the other prize-winners moving up accordingly. In the Service Teams Match, D Company, Ist Regiment, wa3 placed third. This result has now been altered, and Christchurch D.R.C. No. 1 placed third. The execv/jjive committee has decided to reduce the prize money in all matches in the B series (with the exception of the Roberts' Memorial) by 10 per ofrnt./This reduction has been taken off tho amounts published below. The competition will be continued on the range this morning, the first match bein? the Masefield Memorial, 600 yards, 10 shots.
