METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.

EASTER MEETING,

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter Meeting opened at Addington on Saturday m beautiful ■weather. The afternoon turned out bright, and sunny, there was no wind to raise the dust, and with the track in first-class order tho conditions were per feet for racing. Tho sport throughout the day. "was full of interest, for though one or two events were won wi th comparative ease, most of the finishes were very kcncly contested, and a better race than that provided by the Eatter Handicap has rarely been witnessed at Addington. The attendance was very good, both islands being represented, and with the well-kept lawns and flower beds, tho club's grounds presented a very attractive appearance. Tho totalisator investments showed a slight increaso on last year's figures, the total being ,503 3 as agziiusu £30 ; 540 10s in 191(3. Under tho experienced management of tlip. elub s secretary, 111 A. 1. Jlattray, the business details of jji'c meeting were carried out with the eliicienev characteristic of gatherings at Addington, and generally the day s racing gave tho Easter carnival in Chrjstchurcli a very auspicious commencement. Tho Introductory Handicap, whacli opened the proceedings, was of more than usual interest, as the nek*, included several of the candidates for tho Champion Stakes, to be decided on the second day. One of these, Birdwood, was made favourite, but after a false start, in which ho would have gained a bi" - advantage, ho refused to strike a gaTt when tho field was despatched, and took practically no part m the racc. The issue was fought out by two of tho tliroe-year-olds engaged, Trix Pointer and Peter Mac. Thc Americanbred filly made most of the running, but in the straight Peter Mac outstayed her, and won in .good style. Tho Jjendalton Handicap, a two-mile saddle race for unhoppled trotters, gavo A. Pnngle a very easy win with his recent purchase, Sol, who won a double at toe Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting recsptlv. This race proved unfortunate for J Brankin, whoso mount, Mokau, fell with him before entering the last lap. Brankin was rather badly bruised, and shaken, and -was unable .to start anv of his team during tho remainder of'the day. Tho Easter Handicap, the principal event, found Author I'd* ol } made a solid favourito as tho result or his excellent track work, with Tamarisk sccond and J. Byrce's pail 1 ; a&~ mira] Wood and Childsd&le, next in demand. Tamarisk, as usual, made the pace in the early stages, but failed, to see the distance out. St. Ursula lientook up the running, but Author Dillon soon had her measure, and looked like winning decisively, when Admiral Wood and Adelaide Direct appeared on the scene, and in a great race home the favourite lasted long enough to win by half a length, with Adelaide Direct only a head behind Admiral Wood. Author Dillon's time of 4min 29 1-otn sec is tho best recorded by a -winner ot a race at Addington, and shows him to be a high-elas9 performer, but the honours of the race from a time point of view were with Admiral Wood, who paced the distance in 4mm 23 2-stn sec, the fastest performance on record in a race in the Dominion. The Autumn Handicap, for unhoppled duced an interesting finish between Lord Eoanchild ana Eruption, ana though tho former appeared to have something in hand, his task wou !d probably have , been more difficult but for tho fact that Eruption lost a good deal of around bva break. Galmdo liou, who changed hands only a week previous, quickly gave her new owner a return of his; purchase money by win--ning the Wilkin Handicap very, decraivelv from end to end. She registered her best performance to date, and incidentally paid the biggest dividend, of thc day. Cora Dillon was hacked down to a very short price in the Improvers Handicap, and showed that there was very good ground for the confidence or her supporters. She took charge at" the end of half a mile, and thereafter was never troubled. Tamarisk's-showing in the Easter Handicap induced the pubhc to 6end him out favourite for the Flying Handicap, of ono milo, and he had no difficulty in catting down BuHdura in the straight. The last race, the Express Handicap, provoked very spirited betting, Ajnrthos being very solidly supported! lfe and Lady Teddmgjon cut out a very strong pace, and when the latter retired Glendalough joined issue with the favourite, and in an exciting finish heat him by a head.
