CALL TO THE COLOURS
ELIGIDLES IN GOVERNMENT
EMPLOY
At last week's meeting of tho Westland Recruiting Committee, reference was made to tho employment of men in the Government service in planting and other work which should bo suspended during tho war so as to free labour for more necessary services. It was resolved to recommend tho Recruiting Board to ask tho Government to comb out all eligible men in the First Division in the Government employ without delay. In this connexion it was pointed out that eligible men had been taken from all walks in Westland, but there still remained eligible men in tho Government employ, and an example should be set the country by carefully revising the personnel of all public departments so that it would bo made plain to the public that the call for men was being answered in tho first instance by the Government responsible for tho call. The meeting also discussed recruit ing generally, and the opinion was expressed that the authorities should "clean up" the previous ballots, so that all men callcd in the earlier ballots should bo accounted for. Slackers should be dealt with promptly and firmly, and shirkers in the. Government employ should not be re-engaged if it wcro found subsequently that they were not -St for military service.
