ASHBURTOX-CHRISTCHURCH RECORD LOWERED. H. S. Alpe. the well-known Christchurch pedestrian, on Thtusda* attempted and succeeded in 10-.vcr;ng the rccord for tbo distance. 51 miles, between Ashburton and Christchurch. Atpe undertook t!i e feat in aid of tho Returned Soldiers' Association's Soldiers' Day appeal for funds, whiclt havo bjen augumented to lb© extent of -GO as a, result. Tho previous rccord for the walk was 11 hours 11 minutes; A'pe'3 timo on Thursday was 10 hours 31 minutes, or 20 minutes lower than tho previous record. At Ashburton Alpo was accorded a farewell by tho Mayor, and wa3 cheered by a laigo crowd. His lime 3 for tils different stage} were as follows:—AaJiburton, leii. at 10.27 a.m.: Rakaia, arrived. 2.3 p.m., left 2.31 p.m.; Dunsandel, arrived, -1.56 p.m., left 5.-1 p.m.; Burnham, arrived, 6.17 p.m., left 6.30 p.m.: C'tthcdral square, arrived ' 10.5 pjn. There was a large crowd awaiting Alpe's arrival in the Squcre, and ho was warmly chcjred , along Cashel arid Colombo streets to the pjatiorm in the Square, where Mr H. M. Cotton, the president of tha Returned So]di?rs' Association, welccmcd him. and. presented him with a certificate giving the official timekeeper's lima for the walk. Alpo was paced by a motor-cyclist, and a motor-car with the officials on board accompanied liim.
