A SERGEANT'S HEROISM. AVERTS SERIOUS DISASTER. (Australian and N.Z. Cal)lo Association.) (B«utcr's Telegrams.) LONDON, April 4. A Gazette just issued announces that the Victoria Cross has been aw arded to Sergeant F. W. Palmer, of the Royal Fusiliers, who is also promoted to second lieutenant. When his officers were shot down, he took command or the companv, hacked his way through, barbed wire entanglements under point-blank machine-sun fire, and capiured and held a vital position against eight successive counter-attacks. His very conspicuous bravery cannot be overstated, and his splendid determination and devotion undoubtedly averted what might have proved to be rv serions disaster. THE ENEMY VERSION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Reuter's Telegrams.) (Received April 6th, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 5. A wireless German official message states: "The English strongly attacked I northward of the Peronne-Cambrai road. Wo inflicted heavy losses before -retiring. The enemy occupied our evacuated positions. "South-west of St. Quentin our batteries exploded a munitions depot near Vendresse. We inflicted a defeat northward of Rheims."
