TO EVADE THE BALLOT. (MtKSS ASS'-KTIATinN TELEGRAM.I • PALMEIISTON X., April 5. Probably the first case of its kiaid in. tho Dominion was heard at the Magistrate's ■Court to-day. "when Eric Hardy was charged that, without tho consent of tho Minister of Internal Affairs, he did, while a reservist, change his name to Gavthorn. Accused pleaded ''Guilty." The facts as stated by the police were that the accused was drawn in a ballot, but failed to appear. A warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was apprehended locally. When asked his name, he said it was Gay thorn, and showed a telegram containing that name. he admitted that hjs correct name was Hardy. The Magistrate said the proper course would be to imprison the accused so that the military could call on him at any time, and accused was accordingly sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
