CORRESPONDENCE.

REPRISALS. TO TIIE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —There aro many who would like some enlightenment in regard to f'Perplexed's" query as to why tit for tat should not bo the reply to the U-boat menaee. 11' tho Huns hope to get a "half-Nelson" on us under the waves that Britannia rules, I should say that wo would bo justifiecl in getting them on tho hip from- the airj that is, if we can.

There could be a sort of tariff—for every ton sunk, so-many lbs of H.E. dropped, and make the proportion ten times heavier for food relief ships; and a hundred times, for hospital ships. War, being hell let loose, we can't expect to win by turning the other cheek tactics. A boxer keeps his chin well down.—Yours, etc.. PETER TROLOVE. ART TREASURES IN ST. QUENTIN. TO Tin; EDITOII OF "the PRESS." Sir, —It may interest some of yonr readers to know that in St. Quentin, the French town which onr army is just now rescuing from the Germans, 1 there is a unique collection of 18th century pastels by Maurice Latour. They are contemporary portraits of Frenchmen of the- ISth century, and, besides their artistic value, are a most important historical record. Tt is impossible to say what the fate of these delicate works of art may be at the hands of t.ho invading -Germans: but if they have been looted and not destroyed it is to be hoped that when we make Germany disgorgo her spoils they will not bo forgotten.—Yours etc., G. X L. LESTER. LYTTET.TOX MUNICIPAL ELECTION. To Tirß editoh e.i' "rrrn ruESS."' Sir, —Permit mc, through your valuable paper, to call the attention of ratepayers and voters of 'the borough to the forthcoming municipal elections. It would seem that ioo little interest is taken in thc-sc matters before hand. Tile question is often asked, "Why does Ly ttelton lag behind?" I. with many others, tluni: the ratepayers should at, once take the matter seriously in hand and form themselves into a Citizens' Association for the purpose of selecting the most suitable candidates to assist in running the town's business. There are many important works to be completed, and besides the taking over of the electric lighting, the maintenance and working expenses of the town must have careful attention. 1 think in so great re responsibility the ratepayers themselves should consider their part, first bv selecting suitable men to fill the positions in our Council, and second with their willingness to hclo in ali matters of process in our town. I trust the matter will receive the duo consideration and promptness that it deserves.—Yours, etc., J. T. NORTON. Lyttelton, April 3rd, 1917.
