■ Major Austin has received word from Colonel RioKardeon, Officer Commanding the 13th Regiment, that headquarters instructions are that one senior officer must be retained on the West Coast, and ne regretethat Major Austin's application for service abroad cannot be granted; Captain Jeffries, of Hokitika, is also unable to go with the contingent. Only two officers have been selected from the Coast—Captain Cribb and Lieut. Conway.

In addition to the foregoing, about 44 men from Hokitika and 15 from Reefton arrived in town to-night, an-1 were billeted at the hotels and privately.
