HORNBY.
The Hornby Progressive Euchre Club continued their fortnightly meetings on Thursday, when there was a very largo attendance. Tho prizes wero won as follows:—--Ladies', Miss t-aisnall 1, Mrs Ward 2, Miss A. Williams booby. The gentleman's prizes wero won by Mr E. Manhiro 1, Mr Cahill 2. Mr L. Bailey booby. The prizes were presented by iMr G. Scrimshaw.
The ordinary meeting of tho Hornby School Committee was attended by all the members. Tho inspector's and headmaster's -rejwrts ekoived that the work of the teachers and scholars was very satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to the teaching staff." There had been a record attendance during 'tno it.onth; the roll number now stood at 200. It was decided, to engage tne necessary labour to make some improvcn.ents to the school grounds Miss Ainninmouth. of Cust, was selected to till tho position of infant mistress. Final ai rangements were made in connexion with the presentation and social to be tendered tc Miss> Menzies, infant mistress, on the occasion of her leaving the cchool to take up a position at A_hbarton.
A largely attended social was held in the Druids' Hall, Hornby, on Friify evening, to say f arewell to Miss Menzies, who Las held tho nosition or infant mistress in the Hornby School foi the past eleven years. Musical items were by the Misses Coulter, Kerr, fecrimshaw, and Hill, and Messrs Carver, Kidman, fcjhearsby, and Davidton. Messrs Manhire { Howbyes, Rankin, Hqrmann, and Gillihg testified to the esteem in which Miss Menzies was held by the parents and scholars, and
eongr-tulated her •on tho ■well-merited promotion which she had received. Mr Tamce Leslie, county chainpaa, on behilf of tho parents and residents of the district, presented Miss Menaies with a cold bracelet, and Miss Doris Koden, w _o was selected by tho scholars, presented a manicuTO set. Miss Monzies MirUbly responded, and made a point of specially impressing upon the parents the necessity for sending tho childicr roguteriy to school. Refreshments were handed round, after which dances and games wore indulged in;till midnight.
