HACKETHORNE ROAD TRAM.

TO THE. EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir,—Hoping i you will find space for a -.- few lines to air a grievance, which us people'have who are paying a fabulous'rate in support of the above tram, and "who derive, no benefit therefrom. 1 .maintain that the whole' of; the town and-suburbs should be rated for these extensions,,as,here a few houses on the flat near Barrington street are rated excessively who only have their just due, viz., the car to Barrington street section, and instead of benefiting us, what* does it mean? That we,.cannot get a buyer for property now in this bungled rating area. We are freouent users of'the car on Sundays, and when we get on here near tho Hills,- oh, dearT the, looks of scorn- and derision: -we get from the town people and visitors,, as the cars are so overcrowded, and they look asif to say: "Why ever don't you people walk this short .way !" Here'we, are, paying an outrageous tramway rate, and almost without exception we'■ have to stand with our children from Barrington street to the terminus. I think if this badlyplanned rating area is not soon altered, when ratepayers have to stand pcrrpetually, we" ought to bo allowed a badge to distinguish us as exempt Irom paying = fares. There are people on the Hills who are interested in our Tramway Board, and yet their properties come very comfortably outside th<rating area, and us few on tiie flat have to help* pay for theirs and town's bene, fit, although we often walk to tho twopenny section. Ono comfort is that the conductors are always most kind and considerate under very trying circumstances. —Yours, etc., RATEPAYER.
