AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last nipht, Dr, W. H. Simpson, the «resi&)nt. being in the chair.
Some considerable time was spent in considering tho proposed new by-laws of the City Council referring to leavinp; vehicles unattended within the city boundaries, and the Council approved tho suggested time limits ac submitted by the sub-committee .appointed by the Council. , *
The forwarding of some small road mais by a firm started a discussion on the need for a really good and reliablo motor map of the country. The ones available at present were generally considered to be s obsolete and practically uisleea and several schemes were propounded by members of the Council so that the state of affairs could be rectified. Other members thought that better re&ults would be obtained by the letter sigu-posting of the roads in the country districts.
~. A sub-coratcittee was sot up to deal ■with the matter of maps. The Reefton Chamber of Commerce ■wrote with reference. to a road from North Canterbury to Marina, and the Association decided to promise support and a.->k for further particulars. It was resolved to supply certain signboards for roads in the Malvern County as requested by the County Council. Dr. Simpson ard Messrs A. Morton, Johnston and Mills were deleaates to the annual meeting of the N.Z. Motor Union.
A letter was received from Mr. N. Francis, of Waimate, asking that a meeting; of the Canterbury P.M.TJ. ho called in the middle of June to consider tho question of membership of the n.z.m;u.
The secretary was instructed to take steps to convene a meeting on Juno 11th.
The South Canterbury Association ■wrote regarding widening the stock bridge adjoining the railway bridge across the Rangitata ard a«ked the Association's support. A petition was forwarded for signature.
It was decided to support the scheme and the petition was signed by the ConncU.

CTarbson referred to an accidort alleged to have been p ansed by a motor-car at Rakaia on "Wednepdav .n'icht. in which the car driver had driven away withont stopping to onnuire. After some it wa-s deciiled to communicate with the police offerine every assistance to find out tho facto of tho case. ' r ■
