YESTERDAY'S CELEBRATIONS.
TERRITORIAL PARADE.
The King's Birthday broke raw and cold and grey, and it was hardly light when many'of the Territorials and Senior Cadets turned out to attend the big parade. On foot, on horse, on bicycle, and by tram-car, they oade their chilly way into the city. The vast area of King Edward Barracks was a scene of bustle and active preparation at eight o'clock, wh_m the officers and men of the various units went on parade, in the presence of an interested crowd of onlookers. The centre of the B.riacks was monopolised by the E Battery, who had turned out early, and who had their horses harnessed" and their guns and ammunition waggons in readiness to take the road. The mounted men formed up on the road outside, while the Engineers, the infantry, the Army Servico Corps and the Field Ambulance companies paraded inside. Colonel G. J. Smith. Canterbury Infuntrv Urigade. was in command of ihe parade, with Captain A. C.-B. Criichlcv-Salmonson as Brigade Mn.jor. Shortly "before SM a.m. the whole of the units which were brigaded moved oil from the Barracks via Montreal street and Armagh street, to idagley Park.
SENIOR CADETS' PARADE. Meanwhile the Senior Cadet companies of Chris-church nnd suburbs wero parading in Cranmur .square, under the command of Captain .\\ . CFinnis, O.C. Area Group No. fl. fno <-omnanies represented were as follow: —Christ's College. West Christchurch District Hi<th School. Queen V. (No. 10), Technical College (15 and 16), Mar.st Pros. (17), Christchurch City .00), Onawa ((57). Addington (71). Riccarton (72). Papaniii (73). New Brighton (75), Woolston (76). Sydenham Church (78), Sydenham (79). Linwood (33). Richmond (86). St. Albans (87),. St. Michael's (M). Christchurch Central (92), Technical College Evenine Classes Co3>. and FendaHon (00). The comhin__ bugle bands of Christ's College and the Senior Cadets, totalling 50, were also on riarad .. MARCH TO HAGLEY PARK.
Headed by the Regimental Bands, jtho Territorial** marched to Hagjey Park, tho Senior. Cadets Battalion with the Bugle Band joining in tho rear at Craniner square. The troops made an imposing spectacle as they swung along in fine order and perfect steadiness, . the line of march being crowded with intere-ted spectators. In Hagley Park the Territorial Brigade nnd the Senior Cadets were formed up by their respective units opposite tho, f-aluting base. Tho public trooped in in large numbers, and assembled behind tho roped off barriers ou either side of the saluting base. A goodly number nf Veterans and of Honorary Territorials were present, special enclosures being reserved for them. It is estimated thnt' over 2000 people were pre- . sent to watch the proceedings. Total all units on parade, 67 officers and 16S1 other ranks. Colonel R. A. Chaffey, V.D., who is relieving Colonel V. S. Smyth as Officer Commanding -tho Canterbury Military District, was the inspecting officer,' the latter, also being present. The rain held oft, however, but tho whole ceremony was carried out iv a dull grey light,:which, though biignt .unshihe would have added to the , general effect,'did not in any way spoil the display.
, The guns being silent once more, thero came a glitter of bayonets and the «Brigado gave the general salute which was taken 1 by Colonel Chaffey, Who, accompanied by his staff officers, irode through the-lines inspecting tho troops, who displayed on parade, the discipline being excellent. Colonel Chaffey was much pleased with the smart appearance of the troops. ■ THE MARCH -.'AST. Then followed the. march past, . which was a splendid spectacle. Colonel Chaffey, with Lieut.-Colonol R. Heaton Rhodes and Major Pinwill were at the saluting' base, the former taking the salute., The massed bands of the Ist Mounted Rifles and the Ist (Canterbury Regiment), and the Bugle Bands of the Senior Cadets played their respective units oast the saluting base. Though small in numbers the~o_.cers and men of B Squadron Ist Mounted Rifles made a brave show a. they headed the march past, perfect line -Being kept. Then with a rattle and clatter of guns and limber* cam-..tho F F--.tf.erv. whi"h *.•..* paraded in strong force." The wheels of guns and timbers wero almost locked os . they , lumbered pa. t in battery colonmn, keeping splendid line. No. 1 Field Company New Zealand Engineers, a very smart soldierly company, attracted very favourable com- . ment from the great crowd and received a round of h'cavv applause as they marched past. , Then followed in order tf>o Divisional Signalling Comoanv, the Ist (Canterbury) Regiment, Coast Defence Detachment, Army Servico Corps, No. 3 and No. 6 Field Ambulances. Their marching wa« very fine, and the men were very' steady as they oassed the saluting base ..the people applauding each unit., Tho Ist (Canterbury) Regiment went - past to the tune of "A Hundred Pipers,"-the re<rimental inarch; Two officers bore the King's Colours and the Regimental Colours of the Ist Regiment, whore machine gun detachment, under Lisut. Smith, took part in the march past. _ There was a short break, and then
followed the Senior Cadets, who were played past the saluting base in yc.J ..yte bj the Bugle lianus. iieade_ u> the Christ's College Cadets; the lad* iooked exceeuingiy well, and came iv ror lend apj-lau-e from the spectators. The Cadets marched past in coiuuin, and displayed great steadiness. Their iine was excellent, and their discipline very good. The march past was an exceeuingiy fine spectacle, the columns of Territorials and Cadets taking fully twenty minutes to pass the saluting base.
The mounted men and the E Battery then went past at the trot, the horses and the heavy guns and limber., making thunderous music for a very effective show.. THE ROYAL SALUTE. After the march past, the troops were formed up in their respective units, and headed by Colonel Chaffey and the staff officer.:-, advanced in review order towards the flag at the saluting base. Extending aloag a front of nearly three hundred yards, the troops presented a splendid sight as they j;ave the Royal Salute. The spectators bared their heads while tho bands played a few bars of tho National Anthem. The King's flag of the Ist (Canterbury) Regiment was lowered while the salute was being given. THREE CHEERS FOR THE KING. Then came the order. "Three qheers for tlio King." Officers and men took off their hats, and assisted lustily by tlio great crowd present, gave three ringing cheers for 'King.George V. This concluded the ceremony, but the crowd lingered to watch the* troops inarch out through the Park gates and lined the street. The Territorials, with their bands playing lively march tunes, marched hack to the Barracks, where they were dismissed. The Senior Cadets paraded in Cranmer square in the presence of a largo crowd. Then the Christ's Collego boys, with their own band, went back to school to bo dismissed, and the remainder broke off at tho .quare.
