DUNEDIN J.C.'S WINTER MEETING.

(SPJJCIAX to "the rnES3.") DUNEDIN, June 2. Up to the time.of -writing the weather has been all that ha* been, required to make tho MWing of tho Dunedin Jockey Club, which opens to-morrow, a success. To-night, however, it 'looks a little gloomy, aad reports from' the south show that heaw southerly weather has been experiencedown there, and tho very low temperature registered now may bo tlie beginning of our share. However, let us hope not, for under present conditions the course will bo in good winter order, if a little holding. Excellent fields havo paid .up for the races, and so fax the only unlikely starters aro Red Troon in the Otago Steeplechase and Cannonade in the Winter Oate. Sala'thiel is reported to have won so generously at Oamaru that his chances to-morrow aro fancied, though Pure Gold may rim a better race on her own course, and may find tbe mile and three-quarters to her liking, despite the fact that she is not' yet quite ready. The Brighton Handicap field is not a good lot, and the winner will surely be found amongst tbe higher weights. Royal i 3 strongly fancied for the Birthday Handicap, but Magdala, Troon, and Glenfinnan (m_ a generous mood) must have chances, while Peerless will probably bo tho b*-t of the light weights. The Otago Stecplec_a«e is considered a very open went, but with the stiffening up of somo of the fences tho claims of the southerners, The Gunner and Black Sta, have come into high favour. Palisade and Peter head the list in tho Tradeemen'9 Handicap, and Us strong horses ._ re< * uir , cd ' the V will probably beat tho field at the finish, though his owner strongly fancies John Barleycorn. Should Kingsway be ■ reserved for the Hunters' Steeplecha«> he will take a lot of catchin'-, but Case_hoi, Tolstoi, and Zinqabee have •southern performances to recommend them. Gnome has shown a strong partiality fox the Wmgatui course, but to-morrow may find strong opposition from Buller and Firxnbo'd in the Winter Welter. A very largo number of visitors is in town, and the attendance ia almost euro to be a record one. r
