Lieutenant-Colonel Braithwaite, who succeeds Colonel Heard, is General Staff Officer rathe Auckland military district. He received his first appointment in. tho Royal Welsh Fusiliers on May 23rd, 1891, was promoted Lieutenant on May lGth, 1894, and Captain on July 19th, 1899. He served aS Adjutant Ist Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliera, in tho South African Wari from , November • 17th, 1899, to May 5tL 1900. participating in operations m Natal. Ho took part in tho relief of Ladysmiih, including tho action at Colenso, also tho operations on Tugela Heights, February 14th to 17th, 1900, and tho action at Piotor's Hill. He was then appointed to tho staff, and as Assistant District Commissioner his subsequent eervico included oporations in tho Transvaal and May and June, 1900; operations in tho Transvaal west of Pretoria, July to Ncvemlber 29th. 1900, actions at Frederikstad; operations in Capo Colony, north of Orange RiveT, including action at Ruidam (slightly wounded); and-operations in the Transvaal, November 30th, 1900, to May 31st. 1902. He was twice mentioned in despatches and was awarded tho Distinguished Servioo Order with Queen's ineefcal with fivo clasps, and tho King's medal with two clasps. After tho war ho was i appointed Adjutant to tho Royal Military College, and in May, 1910. v.as promoted to the rank of Major. 'He la s. Staff College graduate. On May 20th, 1911, he received the appointment of General Staff Officer to the New Zealand military forces. Last year he was granted the' temporary rank of Lieu-tenant-Colonel, and he has been employed in New Zealand as General Staff Officer to the Auckland military district.
Colonel Chaytor. who succeeds Colono! Collins, is at present Officer Commanding the Wellington District. Bo is a son of Mr J. C. Chaytor, of Marshlands, Marlborough, and became identified with the Marlborough Mounted ?o™ ' .appointed Captain in 1892. Ho served in tho South African war from 1900 to 1902. being in charge of tho Third New Zealand Contingent from May 19th to 26th, 1900, when h« was severely wounded, and in command of the Second Regiment, Eighth New (falandContingent. from March 19tt? 1902. His war service, as given in the Army List, was as follows:— "1900-2: Operation* in the Orange Free State. April and May, 1900: operations in the rransvaal in May, 1900, including action near Johannesburg; operations in tbo Transvaal, east of Pretoria. September 29th to November, 1900. • including act ion at Khonoster Kop; operations in the Transvaal, -wast of Pretoria, September 29th to November, 1900; operations in. the Orange River Colony, August and September, 1900; operations in Cape Colony, March and April, 1900: operations in the Transvaal, November 30th. 1900, to Fcbru- ! ary, 1901, and April to-Mav 3lst, 1902----r.perations in the Orange River Colony, March. 1901, and April. 1902; operaj tions in Cape Colony, February and I March, 1901, and May, 1902." He was j mentioned in despatches, and was j awarded the Queen's med&l vrith three clasps, and the Kirufs medal with two clasps. Lpan his return from the war he filled the position of Ad-jutant-General, and later went to England, whero ho passed the Staff Co.'ego course at Camberloy. He -vras sut>sequently appointed to the command of the Wellington Military District, which position he has held ior closo t on four years.
