JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS.
At the Magistrate's Court afTimaru yesterday a grazing runholder it Mount Nesting recovered £20 damages, and £7 costs, from a neighbour tor Limbs worried by n dog. All tho damage was done in ono day.
Mr W. E. Abbott, writing to the Sydney daily papers upon tho cause or the present high price of meat, says: — •'A few weeks ago I sent to Homebush 6ix trucks of prime crossbred sheep . . • . . These sheep wero sold through the market by auction, at .1 prico which, after deducting increased railway rates and other charges, and 2J per cent, commission, returned mo net, including skins, tallow, tongues, and offal, 13s od. Skins, tongues, and tallow would be worth 4s per head, so that I got for 54ib of extra prime mutton, 9s sd. a fraction more than 2d per lb. The difference between that and what the consumer has to pay is mado up in increased wages to overyono who lias to handle the stuff, from the time it leaves my hands until it is on the table of the consumer in Sydney, and in increased railway and carters' charges, as well as increased wages and shorter hours for everyone who caters to the butcheri'ie trndo, or supplies its requirements dirertiy or indirectly. Slauchtermeti. I be'ieve, now make £6 to £8 per week of -IS hours, when they work, "and they tire only one of many agencies that handle m<*at between the producer and consumer.*"
