HANDLING OF PRODUCE.

(SPKCIAI. TO "THE TRESS.")

WELLINGTON, May 28

A protest was made by the chairman and members of the Harbour Board last night against certain statements made at the Farmers' Union Provincial Conference, alleging that produce was deteroriated by being handled with obsolete appliances at the wharves at Wellington: Tho chairman stated, and the- statement was supported by several mem bers, and challenged by none, that in appliances for rarid and careful handling- of cargo, Wellington was right on top. It might be true that some commodities, such as cheese, were handled too often at the port before shipment, but this was always done by ships or to their order, and ! never by the Board. Ho was sure that if goods wero damaged in transit, the damape was not caused by bad handling at Wellington.
