WAIMATE.

At the County Council meeting yesterday Mr R. H. Rhodes, referring to the re-valuation of the county lands and buildings at £5.365,183, an increase of £505,859 from tho previous valuation, estimated that £1,500,000 wa3 the value of lands held in this country by the Crown. Tho Council spent some hours in committee considering Mr E. C. Studholme's claim for compensation for damage to his car, due, as he alleged, to the travelling public getting insufficient warning that a bridge at Hakataramea Jiad been closed for repairs. The Council decided t-o defend tho case. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr Wm. Barker Howell, who died atTimaru on Tuesday, was passed. Mr W. Hawke's tender of £37 10s was accepted for forming High street extension.

On Tuesday the Borough Conncil resolved that eteps be taken to compel deliquents to connect with, the drainage system. The Waimate TJnofenominational Bible Class hold a social in the Foresters' Hall on Tuesday, commencing with a banquet at 8 p.m. Mr Geo. Dash cresided. The members of the Waituna Class and the Waimate Young Men's Class were among the guests,. Games and competitions were indulged in, and aboat,so people eat down to supper. About 80 couples were present at St. Augustine's Young Men's monthly social. Mr C. E. Bremncr presided. Songs were given by Messrs Blizzard and A. J. Hoskins, anti a vocal trio by Messrs Blizzard, Steele, and Purchase. For the dancing, music vras provided by Misses Brien, Barford, V. Meyers, and Ferriter, and Messrs Henry Carpenter and J. R. Mcßryde. Mr Jas. Symon was M.C The supper was provided by lady friends of the Society. ; Mr A. Craighead is about to have additions and alterations made to the Royal Hotel. The present wooden frontage to Shearman street will remain intact, but a handsome addition will be made on the Courthouse side in brick and ferro-concrete.
