MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A very enjoyable evening was spent in tho Papanui schoolroom on Wednesday last, when the "members of St. Paul's choir and friends gavo a social ; in honour of Miss B. Cooper,- who is leaving tho pariah. Dancing and games occupied most of the evening, and Mr Mawson, on behkif of the choir, presented Miss' Cooper with a handsome . brooch and pendant, .'briefly referring to her good work. Musical and vocal items were contributed by tho Misses Webb, Cooper, Bond, and Baker, Mrs Thorn, and Messrs Fletcher,! Somerset, and Bond, whilst the dance music was supplied by Mr and Mrs -Lines.
Anniversary services in connexion with the St. Albans Methodist Church were held : on Sunday. The morning eervico was taken by the Rev. H. Johnson (Congregational), who preached.from Revelations xxL, 13, "On tho oast were three g-ttes, on the -north three gates." The preacher, likened these gates to the different ways by which. souls found entrance into the Kingdom of God, and specially warned God's people against expecting everyone's'experience to bo .the same on entering theso gates. The Rev. H. E. Bellhouse preached at the evening service, .taking as the-basis of his remarks two portions of Scripture: "For a man's life consisteth- not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth," Luke xii., 15, and John xvii, 13: "And this is lifo • eternal, that they might know Thee." The preacher sought to show how true life cannot be found in, externals, but only through the great source of life itself—the Lord Jesus Christ." During the day special music was contributed, the offertory music at the morning- service being- Psalm. 145, "I will extol Thee" (Macleodsniith), tho solos being taken by Mrs Don and Mr- E. Harrison. At tho.evening service the solo, "Love Not the World (Sullivan) was sung by Mrs Murry. "God Shall Wipe Away All Tears" (Sullivan) was also sung by Mr R. Smith. "Tho Wilderness" (Sir John Goss) was contributed. by tho choir, the solo parts being taken by Mrs W. Stnllard arid Messrs E. Harrison and L.. FlaveJl. "O, Everyone that Thirsteth" (Isaiah lv.) was also given by ,the choir, the music having been composed by Mr J. T. Maclcod«mith.' The solo part was taken' by Miss K. McFarlanc. The collections taken during the day will be devoted ■ towards paying off the current trust overdraft.
At tho monthly meeting of the -Loyal Orange Lodge; No. 33, Rising. Star of Richmond. W.M. Bro. J. H. Morrow presided Bro. E. N. Budden (P.G. Master), the newlyappointed permanent secretary and organiser of tho institution in th*. Dominion; mude his first official visit, and wr.s welcomed by tho _ W.M. After the transaction of*routine business, a social gathering was he'd.
