PORT LEVY.

A JETTY WANTED

MEETING OF RESIDENTS

The residents on tho eastern side of Port.Levy-have for years suifered inconvenience because of the need of a jetty. There is, of course, one on the' opposite 6ide of the bay, but it is too far Tomoved from those living on/ the ■eastern side to be of much use to them, and an •endeavour is now being made to improve matters. On Saturday evening, to deal with the question, a meeting of residents was held in the schoolroom, Mr B. Hasting*, presiding over a good attendance. *ln his opening remarks, the chairman, after making reference to his relations with the Maori residents of the district, said that, although he was not a resident of Port Levy, his sympathies were with the proposal. Ho submitted a draft of a petition to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, setting out th"c great inconvenience suffered by the people in being without a landing 6tage. Mr A. R. Fleming stated that he was in sympathy with the proposal of a signed petition being placed before the authorities, and would move .—7' 'That tho petition be signed by the residents, property-holders, and visitors to Port Levy, and forwarded to tho Board." The motion was carried unanimously. A. suggestion was made, that a deputation should present tho petition in conjunction with one from the boating enthusiasts, but Mr Wilson thought that that of tho residents would, if presented, be sufficient. Ho nioved: — "That the petition, when ready, be sent to rho Board.'" The motion was carried. ' ' ' It was resolved that Me-srs Ruku and Solomon should secure the necessary -denatures and forward them to Mr Hastings, who would arrange with Mr F. D. Kesteven for the presentation of both petitions to the Harbour Board at its next meerinc.
