Work on tho Ashley Gorge-Snow-dale road is now getting well in hand, but has been much hampered by the wintry weather and tho presence of snow. There aro now twenty-four men at the works, and they appear an earnest lot. The camp is fairly well situated, and though sheltered from the south-west catches the snowswept winds from tho nor'-west. At first there was some trouble on account Of want of drainage, but tho men, being adaptive, havo obviated this trouble a good deal. It is thought that the comfort of the men would' be increased, and the conditions made ; more favourable if there were a general kitchen wi'h a cook, who would be responsible for tho food-sup-plies, and who would prbbablv be able to attend to this part of the concern more cheaply than the men do. It would be no more costly, forHliougb tho Public Works Department become responsible for the cook, the charges would bo such as would cover all ex-, penses. Sunday is a busy day, and' cannot be said, in any sense, to ho a day of. rest, for the men must all set to to get in a supply of fuel. At- present there is no lack of fuel but gathering it is slow and arduous work. Provisions go in from East Oxford twice a week. It would b© a good thing if in all operations where a great number of men aro employed, special provision wore made in case pi" accident. Sv far two accidents have occurred— tho on© reported a week ago, and one of minor account —but in ©nch case a demand bad to be made on the private •uinp!je« of a private worker, to render first did and the proner bandage*. It wouM be a good thing if a suitable medical outfit were provided,
