CITY COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.
The Chri.sti-hurch City Council met last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr H. Holland), and Councillors W. H Coopor, J. K. Hayward. A. M. Loasby. J. Reynolds, Gco. Scott. J. McCombs. H. Hunter. J. McCullough. W. Millar F. Burgoyne, A. S. Taylor, J. W Beanland, A. Williams, H. J. Otlej, ,;ind 11. B. Sorenscn. Aii apology was road from O. Morten. The secretary of the Wellington Town-Planning committee advieed that the delegates from the Garden Cities and Town-Planning Association, Lon don, would deliver lectures in Christchnrch on July 20th, 21st, and 22nd. The letter was received and the Council decided to grant its patronage to the lectures. The secretary of .the Sydonham Public Librnry forwarded the annual report whic* , that the membership now stood at 280. The receipts for th,3 year were £36-1 6s 6d and the ejrpenditnre £322 7s 4d, leaving: a balance of £41 19s 3d. The secretary'of the St. Albans Pubic Library and Mutual Improvement Association wrote, renewing an application asking that the Council should take over the Dover street library property in trust for the purpose for whicn it was originally intended. On the motion of. Cγ. Williams, it. Tiis decided to refer the matter, to the Finance Committee with power to act. The secretary of the Canterbury Hockey As&ociation applied for permission to take up a collection at Sydonham Park on June 3rd. Permission was granted. The' secretary of the local Social "Democratic Party forwarded a resol'ition asking the. Council to Drov : de work for the unemployed by clearing and tree plantinc at Bottlo Lake, Burwood. and North New Brichton, also supsresting that street widening , , channelling and lighting, whor* needed, might be put in hand to relieve distress. After discussion, the matter was referred to the Works and Reserves com mittoos.
Tho By-laws committee reported that it had considered the question of the height of fences at the intersections or a number of streets in the city, and recommended that the city inspectors be instructed to interview, the owners fnd. if neocssary, issue notice* under . 213 of the Chrktchurch City By-law No. 5. The committee further reported that the Town Clerk bad' been instructed to takp the necessary steps to have the Markets and Milk Supply Bill introduced into the House.
