TIMARU, May 23 At tho provincial conference, of tho Farmers' Union, held in Timaru to-day, tho question of party politics camo m for a little discussion.
3lr A. Garland (Waimate) was asked to take the presidency of the Union for the year, but be declined on the ground that he intended to be organiser of the committees for iho Reform candidate in tho Waitaki electorate, and be did not want to see tho Uni<m naso--•ciated with party politics. 3lr John Talbot, who was elected provident, pressed Mr Garland to accept th P position, saying that there was no reason whatever why men of all politic.il shades oT opinion should rot hold office in the Union without introducing party politics into it- A man's personal political Jcantn.-H had nothing whatever to do with the Union, which should bo on -rood-tonus, with whatever Government was •**■ power, in order to do the best it could to advance tbe interests of farmers. I Mr Garland said he preferred to keep ! out of office in the Union when ho was i taking an active part in politics.
