BENEFIT CONCERT. To assist the very worth? object of providing an open air home for children in order to arrest in such as h_vo tho symptoms any tendency towards tuberculosis there was held in tho King's Theatre on Saturday evening a grand benefit concert. The contributors to the programme wore a number of well-kuown local performers who had kindly volunteered, ancl a number of tho prize winners at tho recent competition?. 'Tiie audience which gathered was. while being good, not ot such dimensions as tbo very laudable object of the concert de-served, cor yet such as should have been attracted by the merit of tho programme advertised. Perhaps, however, tho fact cf the evenin- being Saturday had something to do with the attendance. Thoso present, however, enjoyed a musical treat, very heartily ar_r.auded' tl£o efforts of tho performers, and demanded not a few encores. Tho singers who contributed to the programme were: Misses E. Croxton, 31. Davenport, 31. Stringer and 31. Saunders, 3lessrs Hannah, Cox, J. H. Coc'ts, A. L. Cropp, Millar. 3larcb, Cookson and Vincent, and C. J oil. All theso performers were in excellent voice. Elocutionary numbers wero contributed by Mr F. McDonald an_ Ali.-s Thiel, Miss A. Saunders, 3iiss E. Devereux. and Mr C. J. Smith. 3lr n. L. Clarko gave a violin solo, and ?,fTiT,'.cr Cordery contributed a v pianoforte solo. During the evening a bouquet of flowers was presented to Miss Balkind Tor her very energotic efforts in organising tho concert. Remarks were also made explaining tho object of tho movement, and the hope was expressed that the necessary sum would speedily be realised by the voluntary efforts of the citizens of Christchurch.
