THE RAID THAT FAILED.
EXCITING STREET SCENES.
RIOT IN BOW STREET COURT.
(By. Cable.—Frees Association.—Corrri-bt.) LONDON. May '-'- In connexion with the suffragettes" attempted raid on Buckingham Palace, one hundred women marched to Grcs-ve-nor street and hurled themselves against the closed gates of the Palace. An infuriated clergyman, in his shirt-sleeves, took part in many scuffles, but the police easily repelled the more serious disorders. On Constitution Hill, women, armed with shears, tried to cut the bridles of the mounted police. Others, with Indian clubs, attacked the constables or flung themselves at tho police, but were thrown to the ground. While a policeman was temporarily blinded with paint, a woman struck him with a club, and he is now in hospital in an unconscious condition. A number of bedraggled women ran the gauntlet through an unsympathetic crowd, but wero arrested, carried to Wellington Arch, and thero locked in a room. They smashed the windows and broke uo tho furniture.
The crowd recognised Miss Billington, and severely maltreated her. The police found her crying bitterly, and escorted her to a place of safety.
Sixty-seven arrests wore made, including several during disturbances at night near Whitehall, where Government officers guarded the building.
The prisoners from the Wellington Arch wero taken to Scotland Yard. Many escaped on to the roof, and addressed a crowd ou the Embankment, but were subsequently recaptured.
Tho suffragettes arrested at the Palace behaved riotously in the Bow street Court. They hurled shoes and papers at the Magistrate, and tried to climb over the dock railings. >
Packets of white powder were hurled indiscriminately by the crowd in Court, which was cleared, after exciting struggles.
One woman was sentenced to ten days' imprisonment. The others were bound over to keep the peace.
