' Palisade showed a lot of nace at tho start" of tho Landon Handicap at Oamaru, but soon c-ame back to his field, being apparently a bit short of work. Sydney files to hand bring news of tuo death of tho three-year-old Vasco —Siikgown gelding, Counsel, whom "Mr J. Birk" recently purchased from Mr G. D. Greenwood. The cause of death was internal hemorrhage. Twelfth Night, who won his first race at Ashburton a fortnight ago, followed up that success by winning in vary good style yesterday. He camo with a good run insido tho distance, and cutting down Speedometer, won by three parts of a length. / In tho list of nominations for the Canterbury Park Troting Club's Winter Meeting, the following horses were inadvo tontly omitted r-~Telegraph Handicap, Country Belle and Au Revolt-; Middlcton Handicap, Tne Lark; Advance Handicap. Lord Ashton. The total number of nominations received is 423. ■ ■ , On the strength of his Ashburton form, Hatana was sent out a good favourite for tbe Empire Hurdles at Oaraaru yesterday, carrying more than twice as much money as Salathiel, tho second favourite. Salathiel disappointed his followers sadly by running off early. Pure Gold finished very fast, and had she beeu differently handled might have been closer up. A. T> Mclvor, tho Sonthhind trainer, brought off a good doublo at the North Otago Winter Stettin- yesterday, when lio won the Tokarab bolter Handicap with Magdala, and tho Seward's Handicap with Peter. Magdala will be remembered as tho winner of tha Whiter Cup in 1012. He put up a capital performance, in winning; in tho heavy going yesterday ,w»th Bst Qlb. Pirahold, who won the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton from end to end, scored m almost similar fashion in the Railway Handicap at Oaniaru yesterday. Ho was ono of the Urst. to bogjn, and won by hali a length, but he was •• trifle'lucky in beating Uynelish, who had anything but- a good passage.
and had a lot of ground to make up 'n the straight. In this race Pride of Clutha, who finished a good third, was quite neglected on the machine, and would havo paid a great price had she run second even. The form shewn by Thrax during the past two seasons has been remarkaoly consistent, and bis performances this season in particular have stamped him as one of "tho best handicap horses at present in commission. Tho Martian gelding ia not usually seen at, his best, m heavy goiug, but in winning the Oamaru Cup yesterday, with Ost oib, he registered a sterling performance. His trainer, P. Mc-Grath, was very confident of tbo result. Tho v vcrious stages cf tho race was timed as follow v^*" 70 furlongs 27sec, four furlongs o2aeo, six furlougs 1 mm lOsec. one mile lm«n -i'scc, and the full distance in -«"« 13sec Rinaldo, who stripped well, was made favourite, but though ho ran prominently for about five furlongs, ho was then in trouble, and iini&hcd a Ion" wav back. As a matter of fact, at the finish Thrax and The Cornet drew light a wav from the rest of tho field, and Wairaki. who was third, was a good five lengths off.
