ORIENT LINER'S GEARED TURBINES.
FEATURES OF THE ORMONDE. The large vessel which. i». being built at Clydebank fox-the Orient Line'e Australian mail service is to-be named. Ormonde (says tho London "Shipping Gazette"). Sho will bo tho third of the Orient Company* new fleet to bo. bnilt at Clydebank, hut she will be different in ono important respect from both of her predecessors. The Orsova was a sister ship to. the Fairfield-boilt Otway, and Govan-built Osterley, and the Belfastbuilt Orvieto and Otranto. All have twinecrew reciprocating and all date from 1003. -■'.«. , . , The Orama, which was bnilt it Clydebank in- 1911, marked an important development, as she has tbe triple-screw combination of reciprocating engines and a low-pressure turbine. Tho Ormonde will have twm-acrew geared Parson* turbines, and so will represent another etage in the progress of marine propulsion. Tho decision to equip with geared turbines a veseel so large—about 13,000 tons probabhr—was only reached after prolonged consideration, and at one time it was very doubtful whether she would have these, or be simply an" improved Orama.
