Tho monthly meeting of tho Temuka Borough Council was held on .Wednesday- iTcnrng. A deputation representing tho Tcmukn. Mechanios' Institute waited upon the Council and requested that the ratepayers should bo asked, by poll, to sanctiou a loan of £1000 for tho erection of a public library, in return for which tho Institute would hand over its freehold site, raluod at £500, and rebuilding fund of J£6o in hand. 'The Council referred consideration of the matter until nest meeting. A letter was received from tho Underwriters' Association, Christ- ; church, intimating that it could not give another test of fire brigado and water pressure at its , own expense. After som? dis-cu-ssion, in tho course of which Cr. Evans said that certain fire insurance companies wero prepared to mako the tost and reduce the insurance rates themselves, tho - matter was left in j abeyance.
