(srECiAL to "the press.") ASHBURTON, May 21. Very boisterous weather was experiienced in Ashburton and throughout tho surrounding district last night. There vvus a fall of 0.44 inches of rain followed by four degrees of frost at Ashburton. while tho weather ail through the Mount Somers, SpringLurn, and Alford Forest district"! was exceptionally severe for so early in tho v inter. Tho flats all along tho foothills woro covered this morning with snow to a depth of three inches. The snow was frozen hard at daylight, and the guard on the Mount Somers train esI>erienced considerable difficulty in opening somo of the points. The snow leached as far down on the plains as Hackthorn which is fourteen miles np frcra -Yshb'urton, and seventeen miles down from Springburn. Shortly before noon "to-day, iheavy hail, snow and rain showers, set in at Ashburton, and continued at brief intervals up till late in tho afternoon. Tho 6now fell in big flakes, but- it did not lie on tho ground any length of timo, except along the fence lines.
