ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES.
TO THE EDITOR O*" "THL PRESS." "Press } " which, gives a very one-sided at tne aagiers anu the south Canterbury Accimatisatiori Society"and their Council. At the trial before Mr Bay, S.M., Teruukaj, we were fined £2 and costs (£3 lis 6d. in all). 'I wanted our solicitor to attend for us, but he said it was quite unnecessary, as the Scmta Canterbury Society had not a leg to stand on. Immediately on receiving notice of the Order ln-Council being gazetted, the sale- of our licenses by onr agent in Ternuka was stopped, and we could do no more. This was con- ' firmed by another solicitor in Ashburton, and has since been confirmed by a solicitor in the Auckland province, who says: ,f I am of opinion that on an appeal you ■wouldhaue been successful, not having .been . legally notified till after the.acts for which you were prosecuted, had taken nlace. . However, you came wclj oat of it. as there is nothing in the -A"t to prevent anyone app'ying cersona ly for a license. Thera is uo doubt you cator well for your anglers. , .' I did not appeal - it would have cost much more than the lo&s of the case. ' When the case was before the court I at once admitted that, two licenses were sold after the notice in ihe Gazette was published in "Wellington, but I pleaded extenuating circumstances. vNir D?y at once said he had nothing to do with our reasons. We admitted selling two licenses, and that settled the case., so Mr Padden recovered the £2 he had paid for the two licenses, expenses and costs. I to* J the S M. I was quite satisfied, as Ashburton had done very well by the transaction. Trusting to your love of fair play. I have no doubt you will insert this and possibly, if not the whole, f-o sense of my letter to the "Otago Witness." who took the same new as you have done. —Yours, etc., A. H. SHURY; Hon Sec. Ashburtoa Acclimatisation Socieiv. AsbWton, May 20th. [Wo sorry space prevents our pubour oorre--oondent 6 letter to tTo Otago "Witness." Tho paragraph he complains of was a, reorint of a passage in the reoort of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, in the course ot whkb. an attack was made on the AshburtoQ Society, . for having ; allegedly increased luriunds by selling ficonses outside the Ashhurton district.—Ed.
